Director of Software Engineering

Nashville, TN. November 2019

Position Summary / Primary Purpose:

The Director of Software Engineering (full-time, salaried, regular) will lead the architecture and development of our new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD)/over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service targeted to Country music and lifestyle enthusiasts.  This role will report to the SVP of Digital and will recruit a team of seasoned, cross-disciplinary software engineers immediately post-hire.  Our customers will access the new SVOD service via web, mobile and several connected device applications built upon a contemporary, modular and cloud-based technology stack that scales gracefully with a high degree of performance and fault tolerance.

The right candidate will have experience providing input, oversight, and direction on the integration of third party libraries and API’s while maintaining a seamless user experience. This position will work closely with our User Experience (UX) and Product teams to deliver a truly premium customer experience.

Understand a broad range of computer science concepts, and know how, when, and when not to use them. You can dive deep into a wide range of technical problems offering suggestions and feedback to your team. Your interest in computer science has not faded as you moved into a leadership role and you are still comfortable with technical details and contributing code when needed.

Recruit and manage a team of software engineers inclusive of DevOps, API/Platform and Client functions

Strong written and verbal communication skills. You can distil key points out of complex technical descriptions to share with non-technical stakeholders, adapting your language and style of communication depending on the audience.

Architect and implement direct-to-consumer, modern web, mobile and connected device solutions for problems of scale.

Lead by example and do not consider yourself above individual contributor work. You are comfortable teaching best practices by showing people, not just telling people. Teams follow your lead because you are an inspirational leader and because you can show everyone high quality examples of your own work.

Lead software project and planning efforts and architectural design sessions in collaboration with Product, UX and Project Management counterparts.

Provide input, oversight, and direction for integration of third party libraries and applications.

Create a culture of innovation, encouraging your team members to find new and better ways to achieve their goals. You foster a culture of tolerance for taking—but carefully managing/mitigating—innovative risk.
